Marcos Vaira
mvaira@argentina.com
took ABC course, doing work with Argentina amphibians. Marcos obtained his Biology degree at the University of Córdoba, Argentina and his doctorate degree at the University of Tucumán, Argentina. He primarily studied parental care behavior of Leptodactylus ocellatus, a species where the female attend her tadpoles until they reach metamorphosis. After his degree he continued researching parental behaviour of Leptodactylus at Panamá through a short term fellowship at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute with the advice of A. Stanley Rand. After returning to Argentina he began new research on the diversity and distribution of the species in an eco-region considered a hotspot in habitat conservation priorities. The NW subtropical mountain forests are a cloud forest habitat locally called "Yungas". He considers his most significant contributions were on general ecology, phenology, behaviour and conservation of anurans, particularly endemics and endangered species.

Arturo Munoz Saravia
Museo de Historia Natural Alcide d’Orbigny
hyla_art@yahoo.com
Arturo is a Bolivian Biologist working with amphibians and reptiles since 1998, his studies are focused in the Oriental slope of the Andes, and since 2003 he has been working on a project in Bolivia with biological assessments to propose key biodiversity sites. At the moment he is working to establish a herpetological collection in the Museo de Historia Natural Alcide d’Orbigny and the first genetic bank of my country. He is starting a project that will assess the decline of some threatened species of amphibians in several areas of the Bolivian Andes.
His plan is to obtain and increase new skills through Workshops, Master or doctoral classes, and apply this knowledge in the conservation programs of the Bolivian and global threatened amphibian species.

Ignacio J. De la Riva
Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales
iriva@mncn.csic.es
Hi Joe: A couple of herpetologists from Cochabamba are interested in raising frogs and they would work enthusiastically in this task.  Both have participate in previous courses of RANA and congresses (as the last one in Florida). One of them is right now trying to get funds to attend the Amphibian Conservation course at the Durrell institution in Jersey, and has already some experience with Telmatobius in captivity. The other works with us in an project of monitoring populations and taking samples both in the field and collections for chytrid tests. In this project, whose principal investigator is Jaime Bosch, there are scientists from India, Australia, Cuba, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, United Kingdom, and Spain. Some years ago in La Paz there was a project to breed the giant species of the Titicaca, T. culeus. They were not very succesful. It seems this stuff is more complicated than expected, at least with this species in particular (I am attaching a paper). If there is any real chance of getting funds to develop a progam of frog raising in Bolivia, these guys would be the perfect candidates. We could really try to set something interesting there.

Maria is a research biologist and logistic coordinator of the project "Decline of the herpetofauna diversity in five areas at the Valle del Cauca ".  The outcome of the project is to check out if the fungus "Chytridium" is the main cause of the declining amphibian population. Her responsibilities include coordination of field work and being a member of the research team.  She is also in charge of the amphibians and reptiles collection at Universidad del Valle. Sometimes she acts as an instructor in the Herpetology course.  By taking part in the course she hopes to share with the participants, lecturers and staff her experiences and what she has learned through eight years working very closely with amphibians in different areas of Colombia. Her focus has been predominately the threats that the amphibian populations face in the Andes, a region with great diversity of species. She sees the course as an excellent place to discuss the probable solutions to be taken in her country to avoid the decrease and extinction of species.

working as a professor of herpetology at the University of Magdalena,
and encharge of the ex situ reproduction of anurans, a joint program that has been establish with Conservation International Colombia.  In this program we are doing inventory and monitoring studies of the low land amphibian populations as well as the cloud forest and páramo species, especially the Harlequin toads genus Atelopus of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Caribbean region of Colombia.  One of the research lines that are being implemented are in situ and ex situ reproduction studies of the two species of Atelopus, initially we are trying to determine the environmental conditions (ambient temperature, humidity, water quality) that induce the reproductive behavior in the wild.  We consider that if we can emulate some of these environmental conditions in the laboratory we can have success in reproducing the different species under laboratory conditions. highly recommended by CI's José Vicente Rodríguez-Mahecha [an excellent herpetologist who is working with our support to establish the third   Amphibian Conservation Laboratory (ACL) in Colombia . As you probably know there are three additional laboratories ( Cali , Bogotá and Caracas ). Juan Manuel has made many important contributions to the knowledge and conservation of Colombian amphibians and reptiles during more than 25 years. Currently he is teaching at the Universidad del Magdalena, institution that has provided laboratories and other facilities to run the ACL. The Magdalena University has agreed, in addition to provide its facilities, to fund an important component of the ACL project. I consider this is a unique opportunity for Juan Manuel to improve his capacities, and undoubtedly he will be a key disseminator of the knowledge acquired at the course, both through his teaching activities at the university and at other training instances CI and partners are planning] he is also highly recommended by CI's Don Church [Juan Manuel’s experience both in the field and in captive husbandry, combined with his access to excellent facilities in Colombia would allow him to benefit greatly from the course and magnify his efforts for the betterment of threatened amphibians in Colombia].  I emailed him directly, but he has not submitted application materials
